About the island

Located 120km or a 20-minute flight south of Dar es Salaam, Mafia Island is one of the most exciting diving and fishing areas in the world. The major tourist activities are scuba diving, big game fishing, snorkeling, beach and offshore excursions; it is a paradise for fishermen, divers and water sport lovers. The water is beautifully transparent with fantastic views of the unspoiled coral reef; the variety of the coral permits an unimaginable quantity of fish, with diving and snorkeling sites just a short boat ride away.

Chole Bay and its surrounding forests and islands are now within the protected Mafia Island Marine Park. With its fine sandy beaches, swaying palms and lush vegetation, Mafia is the ideal spot to relax and unwind after a great African safari. Isolated islets and beaches, lagoons, coves and channels provide many private swimming and picnicking hideaways. Chole Bay is perfect for windsurfing and laser sailing. Bird life is excellent and very different to the mainland parks that guests may have visited. The tidal flats and mangroves are always alive with coastal and sea birds and there are many colorful woodland and forest species.

In addition, sharks, guitar fish, turtles and basket sponges exist in the waters and there are many large pelagic, including sailfish, giant tuna and dolphins.  Last but not least,

About the islands

It is without doubt that the number one beach location in East Africa is Zanzibar Island, an absolutely wonderful island of tropical white-sand beaches, lush plantations, an incredible history and a fascinating culture. The island’s history goes back many centuries.

Its heyday came in the early 19th century when the Sultan of Muscat moved his court to Zanzibar. Spice cultivation was developed (particularly the clove tree), and the slave trade was at its height – Zanzibar became the most important town in East Africa

The islands became part of the historical record of the wider world when Arab traders discovered them and used them as a base for voyages between Arabia, India, and Africa.

Zanzibar capital City is Stone Town a place of winding lanes, circular towers, carved wooden doors, raised terraces and beautiful mosques. Named for its many multi-story stone buildings, these structures are actually constructed with coral and mortar, not stone. Of the 1,700 stone buildings, 1,100 have been classified as having architectural significance. There are 23 landmark buildings, two cathedrals, over 50 Mosques, 157 balconies, verandas and loggias and more than 200 carved doors. Zanzibar, Stone Town has been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Important architectural features are the Livingstone house, the Guliani Bridge, and the House of Wonders.

Saadani National Park

Destination

About the park

Saadani National Park is the one of a kind paradise where beach life meets wilderness. This gives you not only the opportunity to plunge into the Indian Ocean straight after your safari, but also to be submerged in a unique display of both marine and mainland flora and fauna in a naturally fascinating setting. Bird watchers will be treated to not-often-seen migratory birds that love the shore.

Saadani is the only wildlife sanctuary in Tanzania bordering the Indian Ocean. Gazetted in 2005, it encompasses a well-preserved ecosystem including the former Saadani Game Reserve, the Mkwanja Ranch Area, the Wami River as well as the Zaraninge Forest.

Many villages are dotted around the boundaries of the park. Saadani village itself once was an important harbour-town and slave-trading centre in East Africa. Now days it is a small Swahili village of about 800 inhabitants whose livelihood is mostly fishing.

This Park is where crab also meets elephant and the roar of a lion might interrupt your tanning. All the usual suspects, such as zebra, buffalo, elephant, warthog, giraffe, wildebeest and waterbuck are present.

But you also satand a high chance of capturing different types of hartbeest, the big-eyed Rondo Galago and the elusive sable antelope on camera during your jeep or walking safari. Lion, leopard and spotted hyena might be harder to find, but this makes a sighting a even greater joy.

Dar es Salaam City

Eastern Circuit - Tanzania

Destination

About the city

Dar es Salaam is number one largest city and former capital as well as the most populous city in Tanzania and a regionally important economic centre in the country. Its name has been derived from the Arabic language which implies “The House of Peace”.

The city has one of the best deep natural harbours in the world. It also since then primarily serves as a convenient connection for travel to the islands of Mafia, Zanzibar and Pemba both by sea and air.

A city tour of Dar es Salaam will take you to the National Museum, Nyerere Cultural Centre, the Village Museum, Mwenge Wood Carvings Market, and the Magogoni Fish Market, among other interesting spots.

Climate

Due to close proximity to the equator and the warm Indian Ocean, the city experiences tropical climatic conditions, typified by hot and humid weather throughout much of the year. It has a tropical wet and dry climate (Kopper: Aw). Annual rainfall is approximately 1,100 mm (43 in), and in a normal year there are two rainy seasons: “the long rains” in April and May and “the short rains” in November and December.

From a small Swahili town in the middle of the 19th century, Dar es Salaam has grown into a large metropolitan center with a population of over 3,500,000 dwellers. The city population represents the over 120 tribes of Tanzania with their different cultural backgrounds coming together, alongside the oriental civilizations from the far and middle east, and the Europeans including early Portuguese visitors in the 16th Century, the Germans and later the British.

All cultures at one time or another passed through Dar es Salaam. It is necessary to visit Dar es Salaam to understand the secret of letting different cultures live together in absolute harmony. Being the commercial capital of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam is also the main gateway to the nature reserves of southern Tanzania, which include the Selous Game Reserve and the National Parks of Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa Mountains, Saadani and Kitulo.
