Kilimanjaro Weather Overview
Mount Kilimanjaro offers a wide range of temperatures, from intense cold to warm weather, thanks to its distinct climate zones. As you ascend, you’ll experience rapid changes in vegetation, temperature, and precipitation. This variety makes climbing Kilimanjaro a unique adventure. Although temperatures remain relatively stable throughout the year, the season you choose will impact your experience significantly.
Weather Breakdown by Month
In January and February, expect warm, dry conditions during Tanzania’s dry season, making these months ideal for climbing, despite the crowds. March marks the beginning of the “Long Rains,” leading to unpredictable weather and muddy trails, so it’s not highly recommended for trekking. April and May are the wettest months, resulting in poor visibility and muddy conditions, which also makes them less favorable. Mid-June to July brings cooler and drier weather, with excellent climbing conditions. August, September, and October are the driest months, offering sunny skies and pleasant trails, making them great for an ascent. In November and December, the “Short Rains” begin, leading to mixed weather with some rain, particularly in the afternoons, which can make trails wet and muddy.
Temperature Insights
At the base of the mountain, temperatures typically range from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius (70 to 81 degrees Fahrenheit), but they drop significantly with altitude. At the summit, temperatures can plummet to between -7 and -29 degrees Celsius (20 to -20 degrees Fahrenheit) at night, so be prepared for extreme cold. Weather conditions can be unpredictable, so readiness is key.
