Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park is world-renowned as the site where Dr. Jane Goodall pioneered her behavioral research on chimpanzees, forever changing our understanding of the relationship between humans and primates. It is the smallest of Tanzania’s national parks, covering only 52 square kilometers of fragile habitat on the western border. The park is a narrow strip of ancient montane forest, steep valleys, and grasslands that wedge between the steep rift valley escarpment and the crystal-clear waters of Lake Tanganyika. Because of its small size and isolation, the park offers a highly intimate and intense experience. It is a place of deep scientific history and raw natural beauty, where the forest floor is alive with the rustle of our closest biological relatives.

Climate

The climate in Gombe is tropical, warm, and humid. Due to its location on the lake and its varied elevation, it experiences a single continuous Wet Season from November to April. During this time, the forest is a vibrant, emerald green, and the air is clear, though trekking can be physically demanding due to slippery, muddy trails. The Dry Season (May to October) is generally considered the best time for visiting. The chimpanzees tend to stay on the lower, more accessible slopes, and the weather is sunny with daytime temperatures around 26°C. June and July are the coolest months, while humidity begins to rise again in September and October.

Getting There

Gombe is unique in that it is only accessible by boat. The journey begins in the lakeside town of Kigoma, which can be reached via scheduled flights from Dar es Salaam or Arusha. Once in Kigoma, travelers must take a boat to the park. A private motorboat takes approximately one to two hours and offers a scenic, direct route to the park headquarters. Alternatively, a public “lake taxi” is available for those on a budget; this is a much slower journey taking about four hours, providing a truly local experience as it stops at various villages along the coastline. There are no roads leading into the park, ensuring its status as a secluded wilderness sanctuary.

Attractions

  • Chimpanzee Trekking: The park’s signature activity. Guided by expert trackers, visitors head into the forest on foot to find the chimps. Once found, you are permitted one hour to sit quietly and observe their social interactions, grooming, and play.

  • Hiking and Nature Walks: The steep terrain offers challenging but rewarding hikes through several different vegetation zones, from tropical rainforest to alpine moorland.

  • Snorkeling and Swimming: The clear, salt-free waters of Lake Tanganyika are perfect for a refreshing swim or snorkeling to see the lake’s famous endemic fish.

  • Birdwatching: With over 200 species, birders can spot everything from the majestic African fish eagle to the colorful Peter’s twinspot and various forest hornbills.

  • Historical Tours: Visit the Gombe Stream Research Center to learn about the ongoing long-term studies and the legacy of conservation in the region.

Activities

  • Hot Air Balloon Safaris: One of the most iconic Serengeti experiences. Flights typically launch at dawn, offering a bird’s-eye view of the plains and the migration herds. It usually concludes with a “bush breakfast” and champagne.

  • Guided Nature Walks: Conducted by expert armed rangers, these walks focus on the “smaller” details of the bush—tracking animals, identifying plants, and learning about the delicate ecosystem that isn’t visible from a safari vehicle.

  • Game Drives: These are the primary way to explore. Morning drives are best for catching predators while they are still active, while afternoon/evening drives capture the golden hour light perfect for photography.

  • Stargazing: With almost zero light pollution, the Serengeti offers some of the clearest night skies in the world, often accompanied by the sounds of lions or hyenas in the distance.
